The Lady Soccer Patriots celebrated their first ever season on May 20. The squad had an exceptional turnout of players for this first season with 22 girls on the roster. The roster featured a very young group with most being either freshman and sophomores. Due to still awaiting completion of the home soccer field at the Metropolis Sports Complex, the team played an abbreviated all-away schedule this season against firmly established programs. Head Coach Brock Frazier said, "Competitively, we took our knocks this year as we clearly expected and which is typical of any first year soccer team. However the enthusaism, energy, and fortitude that these young women displayed through out the season for the game and for each other was so pleasing to witness and be a part of. Coach Frazier went on to say, "This is a special group not only because they are the first team ever for the school but more importantly the bond they all have for each other. With the team being so young and wanting to put in the work to excel, good things are definately ahead for the years ahead."

Massac Girls Soccer Make a Splash

In field and weather conditions more conducive to a fish than to soccer players, the Lady Soccer Patriots made history and played the school's first-ever game on Tuesday March 15 in a rain drenched Harrisburg.
For a first-year squad playing in then swamp-like and chilly conditions against a veteran opponent, the Lady Patriots under Head Coach, Brock Frazier, could of easily gave in to the bad conditions and their experienced opponent. However despite the many reasons to give-up, the girls squad played with continued enthusiasm and hard efforts until the final whistle. With a Harrisburg 5-0 win, even though the score wasn't the storybook ending they hoped for in their first-ever game, the Massac squad felt in many ways that they were the ones victorous.
"I'm so very proud of these girls. With not many practices under our belt, in these awful conditions, and against an established opponent, nobody hung their head and nobody complained. They just continued to fight and hustle out there. A coach can't ask anymore from his players", said Coach Frazier.
Coach went on say, "To us, this is a victory. To finally see our girls get to run onto the field and play soccer for their school, it's a real good day. They're excited and thrilled about the opportunity. I couldn't be happier for them, the school, and the community."
The Lady Soccer Patriots have well over 20 players on their roster and play an abbreviated all-away schedule. The next Massac game is scheduled at Marion on March 28.

Massac County High School to Begin Soccer Program in 2010!

As discussed at the December 2009 Massac County Unit One School Board Meeting and as reported by the Metropolis Planet newspaper, the school administration has indicated to the board that plans will be underway soon for the High School to offer boys and girls soccer during their respective seasons. In Illinois, boys soccer play within the fall while the girls play during the spring season. It was recommended by the school administration that the soccer programs be developed in the following matter:
* For the 2010-11 school year, the teams will be formed and play under the designation as a "club" team. The teams will not be categorized as Varsity or JV teams and the teams will not participate in post-season tournament play. Due to the likelihood of the game field grass systems needing more time to get firmly established in fall 2010, an all-away game schedule is proposed for the boys team.
* For the 2011-12 school year, the "club" status will remain however Junior Varsity (JV) teams will also be formed and scheduled to play. The teams will not participate in post-season tournament play.
* For the 2012-13, both Varsity and JV teams will be formed with the Varsity teams eligible to participate in IHSA post-season play.
As noted by the school administration, this plan is subject to change and could be altered based on actual participation numbers observed within these programs.
This is an exciting announcement and a big positive step for the school, community, and the youth of Massac County that will now and in the future get this newest opportunity to continue to play the "beautiful game" during their high school years. The Massac Soccer Boosters appreciates and applauds the school administration, the school board, the officials and leaders for the City of Metropolis for the vision and boldly taking the steps necessary to work together and move forward on something that will postively impact so many now and into the future. Thanks for everyone that joined in to help reach this admirable "GOAAAAL" and we look forward to seeing that very first kickoff in fall 2010!
